SEASON the ground beef with salt and pepper and form into four patties.
HEAT a large non-stick skillet over medium. Cook the burgers for 5-7 minutes per side or until golden brown and the internal temperature reaches 165°F (74°C). Remove from the heat and top each burger with a slice of cheese.
PLACE a leaf of lettuce on the bottom half of each bun. Top with a burger and cheese, sliced avocado (if using), a spoonful of fresh salsa and the top of the bun.
