About this Recipe

This simple stir-fry is a popular street food in China. Food vendors bang the lids of their pots to attract attention and stir up business for their tasty offerings.

2 tbsp (30ml) Vegetable oil, divided
2 Maple Leaf Prime Naturally® Boneless Skinless Chicken Breasts, cut into bite-size pieces
2 tsp (10ml) Chinese five spice
1 Onion sliced
1 Carrot sliced
2 cups (500ml) Broccoli florets
3 Cloves garlic, minced
1 tbsp (15ml) Freshly grated ginger
2-3 Green onions, sliced
1/2 cup (125 mL) Chicken Broth
2 tbsp (30 mL) Soy sauce
2 tbsp (30 mL) Hoisin
1 tbsp (15 mL) Chili garlic paste
3 tbsp (45 mL) Almond or peanut butter
2 tbsp (30 mL) Red wine vinegar

HEAT 1 tbsp (15 mL) oil in a large skillet over medium-high. Add chicken and stir-fry for 5-6 minutes. Add Chinese 5 spice and continue to cook for 3-4 minutes or until golden brown. Remove from pan and set aside.

HEAT remaining oil in the same skillet. Add onions, carrots, broccoli, garlic and ginger. Cook for 5-7 minutes or until vegetables are tender crisp.

WHISK together remaining ingredients until combined. Add chicken back to the pan and pour in the broth mixture. Cook an additional 2 minutes or until heated through. Serve immediately.

Make your own Chinese 5 spice by combining equal parts of white pepper, ground cinnamon, ground star anise, ground fennel and ground clove.
