Everyone loves a hearty meatball sub, so try out this sandwich recipe using sausage meat to make the meatballs! An Italian classic with a slight flavor twist!
|1 lb||(500g) Maple Leaf® Sausage Meat|
|1/2 cup||(125 mL) Freshly grated Parmesan cheese|
|1/3 cup||(80 mL) Italian bread crumbs|
|1 tbsp||(15 mL) Olive oil|
|2 cups||(500 mL) Ready prepared pasta sauce|
|2 cups||(500 mL) Grated Mozzarella cheese|
|4||Dempster’s® Deluxe Sausage Buns, lightly toasted|
MIX together sausage meat, Parmesan cheese, egg and bread crumbs in a large bowl. Form mixture into 12 meatballs, about the size of a golf ball.
HEAT olive oil in a large non-stick skillet over medium-high heat. Add meatballs and cook for 2-3 minutes per side or until golden brown on all sides and the internal temperature has reached 160°F (71°C). Pour pasta sauce into the pan and bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer for 3-5 minutes.
PREHEAT broiler to high.
SPLIT buns open and place on a baking sheet.
Arrange 3 meatballs on the bottom half of each toasted bun. Top with a generous spoonful of pasta sauce and ½ cup grated Mozzarella. Broil under preheated broiler until cheese is melted and bubbly. Top with remaining buns and serve immediately.
