About this Recipe

In this recipe there is also a recipe for buttercream frosting. I love this cake. And also like for example where it says 13/4 it means 1 and 3/4 ok. Also sorry about the place were it says (this is a star). I put it there because it wont let me put down a star.

1/2 cup cocoa
1/2 cup boiling water
2/3 cup shortening
13/4 cups sugar
1 tsp vanilla extract
2 eggs
21/2 cups all-purpose flour
11/2 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp salt
11/3 cups buttermilk or sour milk (this is a star)
Buttercream Frosting
6 tbsp butter or margarine, softened
22/3 cups icing sugar
1/2 cup cocoa
1/3 cup milk
1 tsp vanilla extract

Heat oven to 350 F. Grease and flour two 9" baking pans.

In a small bowl stir together cocoa and water until smooth.
set aside. In large bowl beat shortening, sugar and vanilla until light and fluffy. Add eggs and beat well. In a separate bowl, stir together flour, baking soda and salt. Alternately mix in shortening mixture and buttermilk. Blend in cocoa mixture and beat well.

Pour into pans and bake on middle rack of oven for forty minutes or until wooden toothpick inserted into centre comes out clean. Cool ten minutes in pans and turn out onto a wire rack to cool completely. Frost with one bowl of buttercream frosting.

*To sour milk, mix together 1 tablespoon plus 1 teaspoon white vinegar to 1-1/3 cups milk.

Buttermilk Frosting

In a small mixer bowl, beat butter. Add icing sugar and cocoa. Slowly add milk until you reach spreading consistency. Additional mail may be required. Blend in vanilla extract.
