A wonderful family meal in just one dish. Cheesy bucatini pasta baked with tender bites of ham and fresh peas.
|6 tbsp||(90 mL) Butter, divided|
|1 lb||(450 g) Bucatini or spaghetti pasta|
|2 cups||(500 mL) Frozen peas|
|2 cups||(500 mL) Diced Natural Selections™ Naturally Smoked Ham|
|2 cups||(500 mL) Grated Gruyere cheese, divided|
|3 tbsp||(45 mL) Flour|
|2.5 cups||(625 mL) Milk|
|Salt and pepper|
PREHEAT oven to 350°F (180°C). Grease a 9X 13 inch (3.5 L) baking dish with butter.
BREAK the pasta in half and cook in salted boiling water according to package instructions. Drain, refresh under cold water and set aside.
MELT 1 tbsp (15 mL) butter in a large skillet over medium-high. Sweat the onion until soft and translucent. Add peas and ham and season with salt and pepper. Sauté 2 minutes; remove from the heat. Stir in half of the cheese.
MELT 3 tbsp (45 mL) butter in a medium saucepan over medium heat. Stir in flour and cook 1-2 minutes. Gradually whisk in milk, bring to a boil and cook until thickened and smooth. Season with salt, pepper and nutmeg.
COMBINE the pasta, sauce and ham and pea mixture. Transfer into the prepared baking dish. Sprinkle with remaining cheese and dot with remaining butter.
BAKE uncovered in preheated oven for 30 minutes or until golden brown and bubbly.
Substitute Natural Selections™ Naturally Smoked Ham with Maple Leaf® Country Kitchen Smoked Ham.
