Hearty and healthy, Country Style Biscuits fluffy on the inside and crispy on the outside. A great dish to serve for brunch or as a side.
|1 1/2 cups||sifted flour, plus extra for rolling|
|1 1/2 tsp||baking powder|
|1/2 tsp||garlic powder|
|1||red birds eye pepper, chopped|
|1/4 cup||each cold butter and cold vegetable shortening|
|3/4 cup||shredded cheddar|
|3/8 cup||-1/2 cup buttermilk, milk can be substituted|
|1/2 cup||cooked broccoli or spinach, chopped|
|1/2 cup||diced Maple Leaf Country Kitchen honey or smoked ham|
Preheat oven to 375F
Using the shredding disc of a food processor, shred the butter and shortening.(This will keep it from melting quickly)
Add the salt, herbs, spices and flour. Pulse to mix to a crumbly mixture.
Add the egg and 1/4 cup of the liquid, pulse until there is a large crumbly clumps.
If the mixture does not stick together when gathered, add more liquid continue to pulse.
Check the consistency of the mixture again to see if it gathers easily.
*The temperature and the dryness/dampness will affect the mixture. DO NOT add too much liquid or the dough will be too sticky and dense.*
Empty the container onto a clean floured surface.
Add the broccoli and ham.
Knead gently to form a round 8"width x 1/2"-3/4" high disc.
Place on a greased or parchment lined baking sheet.
Cut the circle down the center and gently pry apart leaving 1/4" space.
The cut into 2/3 making 6 large wedges, again using the knife to pry apart.
*For large gatherings cut each wedge diagonally in 1/2 to make 12 portions.*
Bake for 30-35 min until golden brown.
