A brunch item that is decadent and super impressive. Gruyere cheese melted together with sliced ham in a grilled cheese sandwich that gets smothered in a cheesey cream sauce and topped with a fried egg….yummy!
|4 tbsp||(60 mL) Butter, divided|
|3 tbsp||(45 mL) Flour|
|2 cups||(500 mL) Milk|
|4 cups||(1 L) Grated Gruyere cheese, divided|
|.5 cup||(125 mL) Grated Parmesan cheese|
|Pinch ground nutmeg|
|Salt and pepper|
|8||Slices Villaggio® Thick Sliced Italian Style Bread|
|Dijon mustard, to taste|
|8||Slices Schneiders® Country Naturals™ Uncured Baked Ham|
MELT 3 tbsp (45 mL) butter in a saucepan over medium-high heat. Add flour, whisking constantly until mixture is smooth, about 1-2 minutes. Whisk in milk and bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer until thickened, about 5 minutes. Add ½ cup (125 mL) of Gruyere and Parmesan cheese whisking until smooth. Season with nutmeg, salt and pepper. Cover and set aside.
PREHEAT broiler to high heat. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
SPREAD Dijon on 4 bread slices and place on prepared baking sheet. Top each with 2 slices of ham and remaining Gruyere cheese. Broil until cheese begins to bubble and melt. Top with remaining bread slices and divide cheese sauce equally over sandwiches. Broil again until cheese sauce is bubbly and golden brown.
MELT remaining butter in a non-stick skillet. Break eggs into skillet, leaving yolks intact. Cook over low heat until the egg whites are completely set, about 3 minutes. Season with salt and pepper.
PLACE an egg on top of each sandwich and serve immediately.
